Abu Ammaar Yasir Qadhi is an American preacher, theologian, and Sunni imam. He has been Dean of Academic Affairs at the Al-Maghrib Institute in Houston, Texas, since 2001, and is the resident scholar of the East Plano Islamic Center in Plano, TX. He has written books and worked as a lecturer, and is known for his controversial views. He was previously part of the Salafi movement, but is now a Sunni.

His father was a doctor and his mother was a microbiologist. His father founded the first mosque in the Houston area. His parents were born in Madhya Pradesh, India, his father in Jabalpur and his mother in Bilaspur. When he was five, the family moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. By fifteen, he had memorized the Qur’an and graduated from high school, then returning to the U.S.

He has stated that he has roots in Uttar Pradesh, with his great-grandfather having been from Lucknow, then part of Awadh, now Uttar Pradesh.

Yasir’s paternal grandfather was Qazi Ishaq Ali (the son of Qazi Muhibb Ali and Mahbuban Bubu). Qazi Ishaq was born in Jabalpur, India. Qazi Muhibb was the son of Mawli Hassan Ali Sandhilwi. Mahbuban was the daughter of Islam Ali and Saliha Bi.

Yasir’s paternal grandmother was Razia Naimat Hussain (the daughter of Syed Nazeer Hussain and Masooman Bee Syed). Razia was born in Jabalpur, India. Masooman was the daughter of Syed Mustafa Hussein.

Yasir’s maternal grandfather was Hayat Khan (the son of Mastan Khan and Amina Bi).

Yasir’s maternal grandmother was Akhtari Begum (the daughter of Ashraf Ali and Imtiaz Begum). Imtiaz was the daughter of Wali Muhammad.

A DNA test whose results were displayed on the show Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2012) stated that Yasir’s genetic ancestry is:
