Adolfo Suárez was a Spanish attorney and politician. He was the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Spain , since the Second Spanish Republic, from 5 July, 1976 to 26 February, 1981. He was also Civil Governor of the Province of Segovia, from 31 May, 1968 to 7 November, 1969, Director General of RTVE, from 14 May, 1969 to 25 June, 1973, Deputy Secretary General of the Movimiento Nacional, from 21 March, 1975 to 2 July, 1975, Minister-Secretary General of the Movimiento Nacional, from 12 December, 1975 to 6 July, 1976, President of the Union of the Democratic Centre, from 21 October, 1978 to 9 February, 1981, President of the Democratic and Social Centre, from 2 October, 1982 to 26 May, 1991, and President of the Liberal International, from 26 April, 1989 to 22 April, 1992; as well as, a Member of the Congress of Deputies for Madrid, from 22 July, 1977 to 26 October, 1991.
He was the son of Herminia González Prados and Hipólito Suárez Guerra. Adolfo was married to Amparo Illana Elórtegui, until her death. The couple had five children.
Adolfo’s paternal grandfather was named Hipólito Suárez. His paternal grandmother was surnamed Guerra.
Adolfo’s maternal grandparents were Ricardo González and Josefa Prados.
