Alan Bates was an English actor. Alan was the son of Florence Mary (Wheatcroft), a pianist, and Harold Arthur Bates, an insurance broker and cellist. He had two children, actors Benedick Bates and Tristan Bates, with his wife, actress Valerie ‘Victoria’ Ward.
Alan’s paternal grandfather was Arthur Edwin Bates (the son of John Bates and Eliza Butler). Arthur was born in Hayfield, Derbyshire, England. John was born in Belper, Derbyshire, the son of William Bates and Hannah Orme. Eliza was born in Duffield, Derbyshire, the daughter of Joseph Butler and Mary.
