Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.
He was the son of Pauline (Koch) and Hermann “Ermanno” Einstein, who was a salesman and engineer. His family was Jewish. His father was born in Bad Buchau, Landkreis Biberach, Baden-Württemberg. His mother was born in Bad Cannstatt, Stadtkreis Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg. Albert moved to Switzerland in 1895, then forsaking his German citizenship. Albert decided to stay in the U.S. after 1933, because of the Nazis’ rise to power. He became a U.S. citizen in 1940.
Albert was married to Elsa Einstein, until her death. They were first cousins. Albert had three children with his former wife, Serbian physicist Mileva Marić.
Albert’s paternal grandfather was Abraham Ruppert Einstein (the son of Rupert/Ruppert Einstein and Rebecca/Rebekka/Rebekha/Rebeka Overnauer/Obernauer). Abraham was born in Buchau, Landkreis Biberach, Baden-Württemberg. Albert’s great-grandfather Rupert was born in Buchau, the son of Naphtali Hirsch Einstein and Helene Handle Steppach. Albert’s great-grandmother Rebecca was born in Laupheim, the daughter of Samuel/Schmuel Obernauer and Judith/Judele Mayer Hilb.
Albert’s paternal grandmother was Hendel/Helene Moos (the daughter of Heinrich Hayum Moos and Verena/Veronika Fanny Schmal). Hendel was born in Kappel, Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis, Rheinland-Pfalz. Heinrich was the son of Hayum Hermann/Haymann Moos and Lia Heilbronner. Verena was the daughter of Isak Schmal and Johanna Charlotte Bernheim.
Albert’s maternal grandfather was Julius Judas Rudolf Dörzbacher, later Koch (the son of Zadok Löb Dörzbacher/Doerzbacher and Blumele Sontheimer). Julius was born in Jebenhausen, Landkreis Göppingen, Baden-Württemberg. Zadok was the son of Loeb Samuel and Golies. Blumele was the daughter of Loeb Moses Sontheimer and Vögele Juda.
Albert’s maternal grandmother was Jette Bernheimer (the daughter of Gedalja Chaim/Chajim Bernheimer and Elcha/Elsa/Elise Weil). Jette was born in Jebenhausen, Landkreis Göppingen, Baden-Württemberg. Gedalja was born in Jebenhausen, the son of Jacob/Jakob Simon Bernheimer and Leah/Lea Hajim/Haium. Elcha was born in Jebenhausen, the daughter of Baerle/Beerle/Baerle/Bernard Weil and Roesle Katz.
Albert was a third cousin, twice removed, of director/comedian Mike Nichols . He was a fifth cousin, three times removed, of actor and director Peter Berg . Albert’s paternal four times great-grandfather, Moyses Einstein, was also Peter’s maternal seven times great-grandfather.
