Alberto Fujimori was a Peruvian politician, professor, university rector, and agricultural engineer. He was President of Peru , from 28 July, 1990 to 22 November, 2000; as well as President of the Emergency and National Reconstruction Government, from 5 April, 1992 to 9 January, 1993. While ruling Peru, he implemented neoliberal economic reforms. His administration was also known for corruption, human rights abuses, and authoritarian practices; including forced sterilizations and the violent campaign against the Shining Path insurgency. He was later convicted for human rights violations and embezzlement.
His parents, Naoichi (Minami) Fujimori and Mutsue (Inomoto) Fujimori, were Japanese emigrants, from Kumamoto. His father was adopted by Kintaro Fujimori. His brother is lawyer, politician, and congressman Santiago Fujimori. His parents were Buddhists. Alberto was baptized and raised Catholic.
Around 2000, Alberto also acquired Japanese citizenship, having left Peru for Japan to avoid prosecution for his criminal activities. Alberto was married to Satomi Kataoka, until his death. He had four children, including politicians Keiko Fujimori and Kenji Fujimori , with his former wife, politician and engineer Susana Higuchi.
Some sources stated that Alberto’s middle name was Kenya, and his maternal family name was Inomoto. However, his birth record showed that his birth name was Alberto Fujimori Fujimori. He was also rumoured to have been born in Japan, thus making him ineligible for Peru’s presidency under the country’s requirement for natural-born citizenship; but this appears to have been incorrect.
Alberto’s maternal grandmother was named Toki Inomoto.
