Alexander Ovechkin is a Russian professional ice hockey player. A left wing, he plays for, and captains, the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL); and has been with the Russia national team. He was previously with Dynamo Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He was the first overall pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, where he was selected by the Capitals. He is known as “Ovi,” “Ovie,” “the Great 8,” and “Alexander the Great.” He is 6′3″.
Alexander is the son of Tatyana Kabaeva and Mikhail Ovechkin. His father is a soccer player. His mother is a basketball player, who was a two-time Olympic Gold medalist, in 1976 and 1980, and a 1975 world champion. He is married to Nastya Shubskaya, with whom he has two children. Nastya is the daughter of actress and film director Vera Glagoleva.
Alexander’s maternal grandfather is named Nikolay Mikhailovich Kabaev.
Alexander’s maternal grandmother is named Evdokiya Yegorovna.
Alexander’s mother is said to be Mordvin. It is not clear if this is accurate.
