Alexei Navalny was a Russian opposition leader, politician, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist. He was an opponent of president Vladimir Putin. He was Chairman of Russia of the Future, from 17 November, 2013 to 19 May, 2018, and again, from 28 March, 2019 to 17 January, 2021; as well as, Chief of Staff of the Yabloko Moscow Regional Branch, from 12 April, 2004 to 22 February, 2007, a Member of the Russian Opposition Coordination Council, from 22 October, 2012 to 19 October, 2013, and Chairman of the Session of the Russian Opposition Coordination Council, from 27 October, 2022 to 24 November, 2012. He founded the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), initiated Smart Voting, a tactical voting strategy; and organized many demonstrations against the current regime, including advocating for reforms. He popularly described Russia’s ruling United Russia party as a “party of crooks and thieves.”

Alexei was born in Butyn, a rural locality in Odintsovsky District, the son of Lyudmila Ivanovna and Anatoly Ivanovich Navalny, who own a basket-weaving factory. His father was born in the ancient village Zalissia/Zalesye/Zalesie, near the Belarusian border, in the Chernobyl region. His mother is from Zelenograd, Moscow. In 2013, on Ukrainian TV station Inter, Alexei stated that he was of half Russian and half Ukrainian descent, “probably more Ukrainian in terms of roots and genetics.” Alexei was raised in Obninsk, southwest of Moscow, and spent summers in Zalissia.

Alexei was married to Russian political activist and economist Yulia Navalnaya (born Yulia Borisovna Abrosimova), until his death, with whom he had two children. He was a Russian Orthodox Christian.

Alexei’s paternal grandfather was Ivan Tarasovich Navalny (the son of Taras Leontyevich Navalny and Marfa Ivanovna Ilchenko). Ivan was born in Radomysl uezd, Kiev. Taras was born in Zalesye, Radomysl, the son of Leonty Anufrievich Navalny. Marfa was born in Yanovka, Radomysl district.

Alexei’s paternal grandmother was named Tatyana Danilovna.
