His mother was born in Marseille, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France, and also had ancestors who were from Tunisia and Italy. His brother, Giuseppe Emanuele Modigliani, was a politician for the PSI.
Amedeo has a daughter, art historian Jeanne Modigliani, with his common-law wife, artist Jeanne Hébuterne; and a son with Simone Thiroux. The Modigliani name is after the town of Modigliana in Emilia-Romagna, Italy.
