Amy Sherman-Palladino is an American television writer, director, and producer. She is married to executive producer, screenwriter, and director Daniel Palladino . The two often collaborate. She has created the shows Love and Marriage , Gilmore Girls , The Return of Jezebel James , Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life , and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel , and co-created the shows Bunheads and Étoile , the latter with Sherman. She directed episodes of all of her shows, except for Love and Marriage . She also wrote for all of her shows, and for Roseanne , Can’t Hurry Love , and Veronica’s Closet .
She is the daughter of actress and dancer Maybin Hewes and actor and comedian Don Sherman (born Donald Glatter). Her father was Ashkenazi Jewish. Her mother was from Gulfport, Mississippi, and is of mostly English, Scottish, and French descent.
Amy’s maternal grandfather was Newton Maybin Hewes (the son of Newton Heine Hewes and Deborah Bennett/Bennet Maybin). Amy’s grandfather Newton was born in Louisiana. Amy’s great-grandfather Newton was born in Mississippi, the son of Frederick Searles Hewes and Cora Stewart Newton. Deborah was born in Louisiana, the daughter of Edward Crawford Maybin and Georgianna Hunter Bennett.
Amy’s maternal grandmother was Edna Fort (the daughter of Earnest Fort and Nancy Evelyn/Eveline Battiste/Batteaste). Edna was born in Mississippi. Earnest was born in Mississippi, the son of Alexander Travis Fort and Malissa Dees. Nancy was born in Alabama, the daughter of Noel Pierre Battiste/Batteaste and Margaret Missouri Chadick.
