Andy Burnham is an English politician. A member of the Labour Party, he has been Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Home Affairs, from 9 May, 2005 to 5 May, 2006, Minister of State for Health, from 5 May, 2006 to 28 June, 2007, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, from 28 June, 2007 to 24 January, 2008, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, from 24 January, 2008 to 5 June, 2009, Secretary of State for Health, from 5 June, 2009 to 11 May, 2010, and Mayor of Greater Manchester, from 8 May, 2017 to 19 June, 2026; as well as, a Member of Parliament for Makerfield, since 18 June, 2026; and, previously, from Leigh, from 7 June, 2001 to 3 May, 2017.

Andy is the son of Eileen Mary, a receptionist, and Kenneth Roy Burnham, a telephone engineer. He grew up in Culcheth. Andy was raised Catholic. He is married to Dutch-born Marie-France van Heel, with whom he has three children.

Andy’s paternal grandfather was Kenneth James Burnham (the son of Francis Thomas Burnham and Edith Bellion). Kenneth was born in Liverpool, Merseyside. Francis was born in Battersea, London, the son of Walter James Burnham and Sarah Elise Pegg. Andy’s great-grandmother Edith was born in Liverpool, the daughter of James Edward Woods Bellion and Helen Elizabeth Hayes, who was from Fredericton, York, New Brunswick, Canada.

Andy’s paternal grandmother was Emrol Thelma Hughes (the daughter of Harold Hughes and Emmeline Yates Davies). Emrol was born in Warrington, Lancashire. Harold was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, the son of William Cronshaw Hughes and Emma Curry, whose father was from Armagh, Ireland.
