Anna Wintour is an English fashion journalist and editor. She is the editor-in-chief of American Vogue.
Anna was born in London, England, to Eleanor Trego (Baker), who was American, from Pennsylvania, and Charles Vere Wintour, a newspaper editor. Among her siblings is journalist Patrick Wintour. Both of her parents had English and Scottish ancestry. Her mother also had distant Dutch and remote French Huguenot roots. Her stepmother is magazine editor Audrey Slaughter, who founded publications Honey and Petticoat.
Anna is married to telecommunications pioneer and futurist Shelby Bryan. She has two children with her former husband, child psychiatrist David Shaffer. Her daughter Bee is married to Italian director, photographer, and philanthropist Francesco Carrozzini . Francesco’s mother, journalist Franca Sozzani , was editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia.
Anna’s paternal grandfather was Major-General Fitzgerald Wintour (the son of The Rev. Fitzgerald Thomas Wintour and Isabel Milnes Gaskell). Anna’s grandfather Fitzgerald was born in Lincolnshire, England. Anna’s great-grandfather The Rev. Fitzgerald was the son of Fitzgerald Wintour and Jane Elizabeth Dayrell. Anna’s great-grandmother Isabel was the daughter of James Milnes Gaskell and Mary Williams-Wynn.
Anna’s paternal grandmother was Alice Jane Blanche Foster (the daughter of John Frederic/Frederick Foster and Caroline Emily Chisenhale-Marsh). John was the son of Cavendish Harvey Foster, 3rd Baron Foster of Glyde Court; and of Isabella Todd. Anna’s great-grandmother Caroline was the daughter of Thomas Coxhead Marsh and Eliza Anne Chisenhale Chisenhale. Her great-uncle was Sir Augustus Vere Foster, the last Baronet of that name. Her great-great-great-great-grandmother was late 18th century novelist Lady Elizabeth Foster, Duchess of Devonshire.
Anna’s maternal grandfather was Ralph Jackson Baker (the son of James Eugene Baker and Mary Emma McIntire). Ralph was born in Pennsylvania, and was a Harvard Law professor. James was the son of Thomas Baker and Eliza Jackson. Emma was the daughter of John McIntyre and Belle Murdaugh.
Anna’s maternal grandmother was Anna Elizabeth Gilkyson (the daughter of Hamilton Henry Gilkyson and Nellie Henry Trego). Anna’s grandmother Anna Gilkyson was born in Pennsylvania. Hamilton was a merchant from Pennsylvania, and was the son of James Gilkyson and Anna E. Henry. Anna’s great-grandmother Nellie was the daughter of Thomas W. Trego and Elizabeth B. Betts. The Trego surname goes back to a French Huguenot immigrant of the 1600s, Peter Trego.
