Artur Mas is a Spanish politician and Catalan nationalist. He has served as Minister of Town and Country Town and Public Works of Catalonia, from 15 June, 1995 to 30 July, 1997, Minister of Economy and Finance of Catalonia, from 30 July, 1997 to 17 January, 2001, Government Spokesperson of Catalonia, from 2000 to 5 November, 2002, First Minister of Catalonia, from 19 January, 2001 to 20 December, 2003, Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of Catalonia, from 27 May, 2004 to 23 December, 2010, and President of the Government of Catalonia, from 24 December, 2010 to 11 January, 2016.
He is the son of Montserrat Gavarró i Miralles and Artur Mas i Barnet. Artur is married to teacher Helena Rakòsnik i Tomé, with whom he has three children.
Artur’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his eighth great-grandfather, Onofre Mas, of Premià de Dalt, Barcelona.
