Auston Matthews is an American professional ice hockey player. A center, he plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL); and has also played with the U.S. national team. He was previously with ZSC Lions of the National League (NL). He was the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, where he was selected by the Leafs. He is nicknamed “Papi” and “Tone.”
Auston is the son of Ema and Brian Matthews. His mother is Mexican, from Hermosillo, Mexico. His uncle, Wes Matthews, has played professional football.
Auston’s paternal grandfather is Bobby Kay Matthews (the son of Robert Edward Matthews and Mable Lucille Nicewarner). Bobby was born in Texas. Mable was the daughter of John Harvey Nicewarner and Rachel Agnes Lake.
