Barney Frank was an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts, from January 3, 1981 to January 3, 2013, and Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, from January 4, 2007 to January 3, 2011. He was the first sitting U.S. congressperson to voluntarily come out as gay, in 1987.
Barney was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, the son of Elsie (Golush) and Samuel Frank, who ran a truck stop in Jersey City. His paternal grandparents were Polish Jews, from a small city in Northern Poland. His maternal grandparents were from a small town near Minsk, Belarus, and spoke Yiddish at home. Barney’s sister is Democratic Party strategist Ann Lewis, who was married to attorney and politician Gerald A. Lewis.
Barney was married to Jim Ready, until his death.
