His mother, Julie, is Australian. His father is African-American. His mother is white. His maternal half-sister, Emily, has rowed in college, and is married to American professional football player Michael Bush. His maternal half-brother is basketball player and coach Liam Simmons.
Ben was raised in Newcastle from infancy, later moving to Melbourne, and to the U.S. in 2013, initially living in Montverde, Florida.
