Bertie Ahern is an Irish politician. He served as the 11th Taoiseach , from 26 June, 1997 to 7 May, 2008. He was also Minister of State/Defence/Government Chief Whip, in 1982; Lord Mayor of Dublin, from 24 June, 1986 to 26 June, 1987; Minister for Labour, from 10 March, 1987 to 14 November, 1991; Minister for Finance, from 14 November, 1991 to 15 December, 1994; Deputy leader of Fianna Fáil, from 10 February, 1992 to 19 November, 1994; Minister for Industry and Commerce, from 4 January, 1993 to 12 January, 1993; Tánaiste, and Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, both, from 19 November, 1994 to 15 December, 1994; Leader of the Opposition, from 15 December, 1994 to 26 June, 1997; and Leader of Fianna Fáil, from 19 December, 1994 to 6 May, 2008; as well as, Teachta Dála for Dublin Finglas, and then for Dublin Central, cumulatively, from June 1977 to February 2011.

He is the son of farmers Julia (Hourihane) and Cornelius “Con” Ahern.

Bertie is married to Miriam Kelly, but they have since been legally separated. Their older daughter, Georgina Ahern, is married to singer Nicky Byrne . Their younger daughter, Cecelia Ahern, is a novelist.

Bertie’s paternal grandfather was Maurice Ahern (the son of Cornelius “Con” Ahern and Anne Corrigan). Maurice was born in Ballingarry, County Cork.

Bertie’s paternal grandmother was Ellen Ahern (the daughter of David Ahern and Mary Dempsy). Ellen was born in Ballyfeard, County Cork.

Bertie’s maternal grandfather was Bartholomew Hourihane (the son of Bartholomew Hourihane and Hannah Brien). Bertie’s grandfather Bartholomew was born in Castlehaven, County Cork.

Bertie’s maternal grandmother was Catherine “Kate” Mahony (the daughter of William Mahony and Catherine “Kate” Shea). Bertie’s grandmother Kate was born in Ballytibbot, County Cork. William was the son of William Mahony. Bertie’s great-grandmother Catherine was the daughter of John Shea.
