Betty Friedan was an American feminist writer, activist, and freelance journalist. She is known for her 1963 book The Feminine Mystique , as well as the later The Second Stage .
Betty was the daughter of Miriam (Horwitz), who wrote for a newspaper’s society page, and Harry Maurice Goldstein, who owned a jewelry store. Her father was born in Sums’ke, Kharkiv, Ukraine. Her mother was born in Illinois, to parents from Hungary. She had three children, including theoretical physicist Daniel Friedan, with her former husband, theatre producer Carl Friedan/Friedman.
Betty’s paternal grandfather was named Julius Goldstein. Julius was born in Volyns’ka oblast, Ukraine.
Betty’s paternal grandmother was Nechama/Nachana/Naomi Susak (the daughter of Itzhak Moshe Susak and Dobrish Kotik). Nechama was born in Volyns’ka oblast. Itzhak was the son of Binyamin Susak and Rivka, possibly Valdman.
Betty’s maternal grandfather was named Sandor Horwitz.
