His mother is a teacher. He was mostly raised in Detroit, Michigan. He has a son with his partner, pop and R&B singer and songwriter Jhené Aiko .
He has stated that he is of half Nigerian descent. It is not clear if this is accurate. Big Sean may have been referring to a DNA test.
Big Sean’s maternal grandfather was named Joseph Leonard. Joseph was from North Carolina.
Big Sean’s maternal grandmother was named Mildred V. Leonard. Mildred was from West Virginia, and was one of the first black female captains during WWII, and one of the first black women to serve as a police officer in Detroit.
