Bob McDonnell is an American attorney, businessperson, politician, military officer, and professor. A Republican, he was Attorney General of Virginia, from January 14, 2006 to February 20, 2009, and Governor of Virginia, from January 16, 2010 to January 11, 2014. He served in the U.S. Army, on active duty from 1976 to 1981, and on reserve from 1981 to 1997.
Bob is the son of Emma B. Meta (Meiller) and Lt. Col. John Francis McDonnell. He spent part of his childhood in Germany, while his father was a U.S. Air Force officer there. His family later settled in Fairfax County, Virginia, in 1955 when he was a year old. He has five children with his former wife Maureen Gardner.
Bob’s paternal grandfather was John James McDonnell (the son of John McDonnell and Margaret Brennan). Bob’s grandfather John was Irish.
Bob’s paternal grandmother was Anna Teresa Carney (the daughter of James J. Carney and Annie Feeney). Bob’s grandmother Anna was born in Massachusetts, to Irish parents. James was the son of Michael Carney and Mary. Bob’s great-grandmother Annie was the daughter of John Feeney and Margaret.
Bob’s maternal grandfather was The Rev. John Hans Meiller. The Rev John was born in Alsace-Lorraine.
Bob’s maternal grandmother was Bertha Rose/Rosine Dollfus (the daughter of Charles Dollfuss/Dollfus and Bertha Sturm). Bob’s grandmother Bertha was born in Mulhave (Mülhausen), Alsace-Lorraine. Bob’s great-grandmother Bertha was the daughter of Leonard Sturm and Rosine Trub.
