Brendan Shanahan is a Canadian professional ice hockey player, executive, and actor. A left wing, he played for the New Jersey Devils, the St. Louis Blues, Düsseldorfer EG, the Hartford Whalers, the Detroit Red Wings, and the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL); and with the Canada national team. Regarded as one of the greatest, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013. He was also the president and alternate governor for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the director of player safety for the NHL.
Brendan is the son of Irish parents, Rosaleen and Donal Shanahan, who was a firefighter and Chief of Fire Prevention in Toronto. He is married to Catherine, with whom he has three children. He became a U.S. citizen in 2002.
Brendan’s paternal grandfather was Frederick Shanahan (the son of William Shanahan and Martha Jane Richards).
Brendan’s paternal grandmother was Mary O’Sullivan (the daughter of David O’Sullivan and Margaret Mary McSweeney). Margaret was the daughter of Mortimer McSweeney and Nell Lehane.
Brendan’s maternal grandfather was Joseph Kerr (the son of Thomas Kerr and Jane Bell).
Brendan’s maternal grandmother was named Rose Ann Farnan.
