Carmen is the daughter of Basque banker Heliodoro Carmelo Fernández-Lomana Perelétegui and María Josefa Gutiérrez-García y Fernández-Getino. She is the widow of Chilean industrial designer Guillermo Capdevilla, who died in 1999. Her maternal grandparents were from Canseco, León.
Carmen’s maternal grandfather was named Adriano Gutiérrez (the son of Víctor Gutiérrez).
