Carmen Yulín Cruz is a Puerto Rican politician. She has served as a Member of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives from the at-large district, from January 2, 2009 to January 1, 2013, and Mayor of San Juan, from January 14, 2013 to December 31, 2020. She is affiliated with the Popular Democratic and Democratic Parties.

Her father, Pedro Antonio Cruz y Vega, was born in Guánica. Her mother, Carmen Irene Soto y Molina, was born in Lares. Her middle name, Yulín, is inherited from her paternal grandmother. Carmen has a daughter.

Carmen’s paternal grandfather was Pedro Antonio Cruz y Vicens (the son of José Rafael Cruz and Margarita Vicens y Vargas). Pedro was born in Puerto Rico. Margarita was the daughter of a Spanish emigrant, Pedro Vicens y Morey, of Majorca, Balearic Islands, and of Gabriela Vargas.

Carmen’s paternal grandmother was Lutgarda Vega y Rosario (the daughter of Juan Clímaco Vega y Guzmán and Mariana Rosario y Arroyo). Lutgarda was born in Guánica, Puerto Rico. Clímaco was the son of José María Vega y Vega and Petronila Guzmán y Alameda. Mariana was the daughter of José Ramón Rosario y Higuerra and María Crisóstoma Arroyo y González.

Carmen’s maternal grandfather was Salvador Américo Soto é Irizarry (the son of Manuel Soto y Segarra and María Evangelista Irizarry y González). Salvador was born in Lares, Puerto Rico. Manuel was the son of Eugenio Soto y Alicea and María del Carmen Segarra y López. Evangelista was the daughter of Damián Irizarry y Roman and María Irene González y Hernández.

Carmen’s maternal grandmother was Irene Molina y López (the daughter of Ildefonso Molina y Borrero and Nazaria/Nasaria López y Soto). Irene was born in Lares, Puerto Rico. Ildefonso was the son of Isabel Molina y Padua and María Monserrate Borrero y Quílez. Nazaria was the daughter of Bernardino López y Pujol and María de los Ángeles Soto y Segarra.

Carmen’s matrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her fifth great-grandmother, Tomasa Irizarry y Ríos, of San Sebastián.
