Her mother, Lena Elisabeth Melander, is ethnic Swedish. Her father, Paul Mikael Hjelt, is the son of Finnish emigrants, the former from Helsinki. He also has German [including Baltic German], Swedish, and distant Belgian [Flemish], Russian, and Scottish, ancestry.
Caroline’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her eighth great-grandfather, Börjel Hjelt.
Caroline’s paternal grandfather was Paavo Artur Samuel Hjelt (the son of Arthur Ludvig Hjelt and Aino Maria Neovius). Paavo was born in Helsinki, Uusimaa, Finland. Caroline’s great-grandfather Arthur was the son of Arkkiatri Otto Edvard August Hjelt and Aurora Yolanda Thuneberg. Aino was the daughter of Lars Theodor Neovius and Anna Lovisa Christina von Törne.
