Caroline Pennell, also known as Carol Ades, is an American singer and songwriter. She gained recognition as a contestant on the fifth season of The Voice .

Caroline’s paternal grandfather was Hugh Pennell (the son of John Walton Pennell and Caroline Louise Wellendorf). Hugh was born in Vienna, Ohio. John was born in Jefferson, Ohio, the son of Paul Presson Pennell and Ruth Anna Gates. Caroline was born in Boardman, Ohio, the daughter of Herman Carl Wellendorf, whose parents were from Mecklenburg, Germany; and of Blanch D. Haverstick, who had English and German [including Alsatian] ancestry.

Caroline’s paternal grandmother was Nancy Linkroum (the daughter of William Henry Linkroum, Jr. and Mabel Claire Sheffield). Nancy was born in Hackensack, New Jersey. William was born in Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey. He was the son of William Henry Linkroum, who was of mostly Dutch descent; and of Henriette Josephine Bauer, whose father was from Prussia, Germany, and whose mother was also of German descent. Caroline’s great-grandmother Mabel was born in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of Owen Arthur Sheffield and Daisey Dowles. Some of Nancy’s Dutch ancestors were from modern-day Denmark. She also descended from Valentine Claeszen (b. 1637), who was a German from Transylvania.

Caroline’s maternal grandfather was Richard Lewis Ades (the son of Samuel Siahou D. Ades and Adele O. Keilson). Richard was born in Brooklyn, New York. Samuel was born in Aleppo, Syria, to Sephardi Jewish/Mizrahi Jewish parents, with more distant origins in Italy and Iraq. Caroline’s great-grandmother Adele was born in New York, to Ashkenazi Jewish parents, from Seirijai, Lithuania.

Caroline’s maternal grandmother was named Elaine.
