Carter’s paternal grandfathe was Nicholas Oosterhouse (the son of Henry Osterhouse and Helen Tubergen). Nicholas was born in Michigan. Henry was born in Michigan, the son of Dutch parents, Nicholas Jacobs “Klaas” Oosterhuis and Hendrika “Reika” Mersman. Helen was born in Michigan, the daughter of Gerrit B. Van Tubbergen, who was Dutch; and of Fanny Hartger, whose parents were German, and who may have also had Dutch ancestry.
Carter’s paternal grandmother was Lois V. Messinger (the daughter of Martin Messinger and Mary Viola Knowlton). Lois was born in Michigan.
