César Franck was a Belgian-French Romantic composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher. He is considered one of the most important French composers and teachers of the second half of the 19th century.
César was the son of Maria Catherine/Catharina-Barbe/Barbara (Frings) and Nicolas-Joseph Franck, a bank clerk. His father was born in Gemmenich, Duchy of Limburg. His paternal ancestors hailed from the Dutch-Belgian-German border region surrounding Limburg and Walloonia. His mother was born in Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. César was married to Eugénie-Félicité-Caroline Saillot, with whom he had two children. Félicité’s parents were members of the Comédie-Française company under the name Desmousseaux.
César’s earliest known patrilineal ancestor was Jehan/Jan Franck (born c. 1550), who held the office of alderman of Montzen.
