Charlie Conacher was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. A forward/right wing, he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Detroit Red Wings, and the New York Americans of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was nicknamed “the Big Bomber.”
He was the son of Elizabeth and Benjamin Conacher. His brothers, Lionel Conacher and Roy Conacher, were also professional ice hockey players, as was his son, Pete Conacher, and his nephew, Brian Conacher. Lionel was also a Liberal Party politician, who was a Member of Parliament for Trinity (ON), from June 27, 1949 to May 26, 1954. Brian has also been a coach, executive, and broadcaster. Another nephew, Lionel Conacher, Jr., was a professional football player.
Charlie’s paternal grandfather was William Conacher (the son of James Conacher and Grace McLagan). William’s parents were Scottish. James was the son of Mungo Conacher and Christian Keir. Grace was the daughter of Charles McLagan and Grace McDonald.
Charlie’s paternal grandmother was Helen Marie Young (the daughter of James Young and Augusta Maria Manners). Augusta was born in England, the daughter of an English father, George Manners, and of a Welsh mother, Charolette Hughes.
Charlie’s maternal grandfather was named James Black.
Charlie’s maternal grandmother was Eliza Cummins (the daughter of Laurence Cummins and Bridget Ward). Eliza’s parents were Irish. Laurence was the son of John Cummins and Ann Bicaby. Bridget was the daughter of Thomas Ward and Ann Jane Brislawn.
