Chelsea’s paternal grandfather was Emil “Tom” Frei (the son of Emil Frei and Alice Ursula Betz). Emil was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and was a prominent physician and oncologist. He was the director and physician-in-chief of the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and a professor at Harvard Medical School. Chelsea’s great-grandfather Emil was born in California, to German parents, Emil Frei and Emma, who was from Heidelberg. Chelsea’s great-grandmother Alice was born in Missouri, the daughter of Peter Edward Betz, whose parents were German; and of Mary Cecilia Templeman, whose parents were English and Irish, respectively.
Chelsea’s paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Smith (the daughter of Edward Hugh Smith and Lillian Domigan). Elizabeth was born in Massachusetts, and was a nurse. Chelsea’s maternal grandfather was Peter Philip Rubenstein (the son of Leon Rubenstein and Blanche Ethel Efran). Peter was born in Massachusetts. Leon was born in Massachusetts, to Russian Jewish parents, Moss H. Rubenstein and Leah Benjamin. Blanche was born in New York, also to Russian Jewish parents, Jacob Efran and Rose Zipin.
