Christy Mathewson was an American professional baseball player, and coach. A pitcher, he played for the New York Giants, as well as the Cincinnati Reds, of Major League Baseball (MLB). He also managed the Cincinnati Reds, and coached the New York Giants. He was nicknamed “Big Six,” “The Christian Gentleman,” “Matty,” and “The Gentleman’s Hurler.”

Christy was the son of Minerva Isabella and Gilbert Bailey Mathewson. His brother was professional baseball player Henry Mathewson. He was married to Jane, with whom he had a son. Christy was a devout Christian.

Christy’s paternal grandfather was named Henry Mathewson.
