Clive Barker is an English playwright, writer, novelist, film director, filmmaker, and visual artist. He is known for his Books of Blood short stories, including The Forbidden ; and for his novella The Hellbound Heart . He has directed and written the films Hellraiser (1987), Nightbreed , and Lord of Illusions , written the film Rawhead Rex , and co-written the film Underworld (1985). All adapted his own writing work, except for Underworld , with the Hellraiser films having been inspired by The Hellbound Heart . His The Forbidden story inspired the Candyman films, and his Books of Blood overall were adapted into the films Book of Blood (2009) and Books of Blood (2020). He also directed and wrote the short films Salome and The Forbidden (1978), and wrote for the series Tales From The Darkside and Masters of Horror .
Clive is the son of Joan Ruby, a painter and school welfare officer, and Leonard Barker, a personnel director.
Clive’s paternal grandfather was named Albert Edward Barker.
Clive’s paternal grandmother was Louisa Florence Jones (the daughter of Alexander Jones and Louisa Frances Morgan). Clive’s grandmother Louisa was born in Liverpool, Lancashire.
