He was adopted by white parents, Teresa and Rick Kaepernick. The surname Kaepernick is German. His biological father was African-American. His biological mother, Heidi (Zabransky) Russo, is white. He was baptized Methodist and confirmed Lutheran; he also attended a Baptist church in college. Colin is a practicing Christian.
