Conn Smythe was a Canadian businessperson, soldier, executive, and sportsman in ice hockey and horse racing. He served in WWI and WWII; and was a principle owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, from 1927 to 1961, and builder of the Maple Leaf Gardens. His name appears on eight Stanley Cups, due to his successes with the Maple Leafs franchise and their championships. He bred and owned race horses.
Conn was the son of Mary Adelaide “Pollie” and Albert Ernest Stafford Smythe, who was a journalist, poet, and charter member of the Theosophical Society of Canada. His father was Irish, from County Antrim. His mother was English. He was married to Irene Eleanor Sands, until her death, with whom he had four children, including Stafford Smythe, who was president of Maple Leaf Gardens Ltd., and the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team, both, from 1961 to 1969, and from 1970 to 1971, his death.
Conn’s paternal grandfather was named James Stafford Smythe.
