She is known for her roles in the films Widows , Bad Times at the El Royale , Harriet (2019), as Harriet Tubman; Chaos Walking , Needle in a Timestack , Pinocchio (2022), Drift (2023), Luther: The Fallen Sun , and, as Elphaba Thropp, Wicked (2024) and Wicked: For Good ; and on the shows Mr Selfridge , Broad City , The Outsider , Genius: Aretha Franklin , RoboGobo , and Charlotte’s Web . She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for Harriet and Wicked .
Her parents are Nigerian. Her mother, Edith, is a nurse.
