Cyril Ramaphosa is a South African politician, businessperson, activist, and trade union leader. He has served as President of South Africa, since 15 February, 2018, and President of the African National Congress, since 18 December, 2017. He was previously Secretary-General of the National Union of Mineworkers, from August 1982 to June 1991, Secretary-General of the African National Congress, from 7 July, 1991 to December 1996, Deputy President of the African National Congress, from 18 December, 2012 to 18 December, 2017, Deputy President of South Africa, 26 May, 2014 to 15 February, 2018, Chancellor of the University of Mpumalanga, from 2 April, 2016 to 1 July, 2021, and Chairperson of the African Union, from 10 February, 2020 to 6 February, 2021; as well as, a Member of the National Assembly, from 9 May, 1994 to December 1996.
He is the son of Erdmuth and policeman Samuel Ramaphosa. He is married to Tshepo Motsepe, with whom he has four children.
