Dag Hammarskjöld was a Swedish economist and diplomat. He served as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations , from 10 April, 1953 to 18 September, 1961.

He was the son of Agnes Maria Carolina (Almquist) and politician, scholar, statesman, diplomat, academic, and cabinet minister Hjalmar Hammarskjöld , who was Prime Minister of Sweden, from 17 February, 1914 to 30 March, 1917, among other duties. His brother was lawyer and diplomat Åke Hammarskjöld. His uncle was Swedish Army officer and conservative politician Carl Gustaf Hammarskjöld, who was Minister of Defence, from 27 October, 1920 to 6 June, 1921. His maternal half-great-uncle was author and poet Carl Jonas Love Almqvist. He was raised in Uppsala Castle.

Secretary-General Hammarskjöld’s paternal grandfather was Knut Wilhelm/Vilhelm Hammarskjöld (the son of Carl Åke Hammarskjöld and Charlotta Eleonora Rääf). Knut was born in Tuna, Kalmar, and was a lieutenant, noble, and landowner. Carl was the son of Carl Gustaf Hammarskjöld and Catharina Mariana Breitholtz. Charlotta was the daughter of Leonard Henrik Rääf and Hedvig Charlotta Grönhagen.

Secretary-General Hammarskjöld’s paternal grandmother was Maria Lovisa Cecilia “Mimmi” Wilhelmina/Vilhelmina Cöster (the daughter of Fredrik Bernhard Cöster and Ebba Eleonora Charlotta Iserhielm). Mimmi was born in Stockholm. Fredrik was the son of Hans Peter Cöster and Beata Maria Agrell. Ebba was the daughter of Carl Johan Iserhielm and Lovisa Gustava von Köhler.

Secretary-General Hammarskjöld’s maternal grandfather was Gustaf Fridolf Almqvist (the son of Carl Gustaf Almqvist and Agneta Katarina Altén). Secretary-General Hammarskjöld’s grandfather Gustaf was born in Antuna, Ed, Stockholm. Carl was the son of Eric Jonas Almqvist and Hedvig Cecilia Bergman. Agneta was the daughter of Martin Alten and Fredrika Emerentia Westerberg.

Secretary-General Hammarskjöld’s maternal grandmother was Maria Wilhelmina Grandin (the daughter of Anders Grandin and Maria Blomberg). Secretary-General Hammarskjöld’s grandmother Maria was born in Skultuna, Västmanland. Anders was the son of Anders Jansson and Anna Britt Jansdotter. Secretary-General Hammarskjöld’s great-grandmother Maria was the daughter of Per Jansson and Sara Ersdotter.
