D’Angelo was an American rhythm and blues musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. He was known as a pioneer of neo-soul. He was a member of experimental black music collective Soulquarians, R&B and neo soul supergroup The Soultronics; his own band D’Angelo and The Vanguard/The Vanguard; and hip-hop group I.D.U. Erykah Badu , Common , Mos Def , Questlove , and Q-Tip were also members of Soulquarians. Anthony Hamilton and Questlove were also members of The Soultronics.

His father, Luther Archer, was a Pentecostal preacher, His mother, Marian Elizabeth Cox, was a pastor and church elder. He dropped out of school at eighteen to move to New York City, New York, for his music career. He had three children, including a son with his former partner, soul singer, songwriter, and rapper Angie Stone.

D’Angelo’s paternal grandfather was Lt. Archer.
