He was born in Detroit, and raised in Duluth, Minnesota. He was born deaf, and his parents were deaf also. He was adopted by his paternal aunt Lori Durant, and later her wife Mary Engels. Daniel is married to professional dancer, choreographer, and teacher Britt Stewart. Britt is African-American.
Daniel’s grandfather likely was Donald Stephen Durant (the son of Leonard Joseph Durant and Ida). Donald’s parents were French-Canadian, his father from Amherst, Nova Scotia and his mother from Newfoundland.
Daniel’s grandmother likely was Jeannine E. M. Wesley (the daughter of Alvin E. Wesley and Germaine/Jermaine J. Bertheaume). Alvin was the son of Edward G. Wesley and Amanda A. Mousseau, who was Canadian. Germaine was born in Canada, the daughter of Joseph Oscar Berthiaume and Gracia/Gratia/Grace Marion.
