David Allan Coe was an American singer and songwriter. He was known in the outlaw country genre. His songs included “You Never Even Called Me by My Name,” “Longhaired Redneck,” “The Ride,” “Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile,” and “She Used to Love Me a Lot.” He was nicknamed D.A.C.

David was the son of Dorothy Ruth and Donald Mahan Coe, Jr. He attended reform schools.

David’s paternal grandfather was Donald Mahan Coe (the son of Frank Egbert Coe and Catherine Eugenia “Katie” Mahan). David’s grandfather Donald was born Garrettsville, Portage County, Ohio. Frank was born in Nelson, Portage County, the son of Emery/Emory John Coe and Arvilla Knowlton. Frank descended from English colonists in Massachusetts. David’s great-grandmother Catherine was born in Freedom, Portage County, the daughter of Willard Jerome Mahan and Catherine Hughes, whose own parents were Welsh.

David’s paternal grandmother was Alice M. Lewis (the daughter of David H. Lewis and Margaret/Margrette Phillips). Alice was born in Kent, Portage County, Ohio, to Welsh parents. David was born in Vale of Glamorgan, the son of Tytus Lewis.

David’s maternal grandfather was William Clarence Wilson (the son of George Calvin Wilson and Sarah Catherine Wagner). William was born in Clyde, Ohio, to parents from Pennsylvania. Sarah was possibly of Pennsylvania Dutch descent. She was the daughter of George Wagner.

David’s maternal grandmother was named Lula Earl Dunn (the daughter of Jennie E. Dunn). Lula was born in Lewiston, Pennsylvania. Her father was possibly Harry F.
