David Dinkins was an American politician, lawyer, and author. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Mayor of New York City, from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1993. He was previously a Member of the New York State Assembly, from January 1, 1966 to December 31, 1966, and Borough President of Manhattan, from January 1, 1986 to December 31, 1989. He was the city’s first African-American mayor.

David was the son of Sarah “Sally” Lucy, a domestic worker, and William Harvey Dinkins, a real estate agent and barber. He was partly raised in Harlem. David was married to Joyce Burrows, until her death, with whom he had two children. Joyce was the daughter of Daniel L. Burrows, who was a member of the New York State Assembly, from 1939 and 1944.

David’s paternal grandfather was The Rev. William Harvey Dinkins (the son of George Dinkins and Joan). The Rev. William was born in Virginia.

David’s paternal grandmother was Myrteen Warren Tucker (the daughter of Stephen Tucker and Louisa Ervin). Myrteen was born in Virginia.

David’s maternal grandparents were named Henry Lucy and Nora.
