David Eby is a Canadian politician and lawyer. He has been Premier of British Columbia, since November 18, 2022, and Leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party, since October 21, 2022. He was previously Attorney General of British Columbia, from July 18, 2017 to July 19, 2022, and Minister Responsible for Housing of British Columbia, from November 26, 2020 to July 19, 2022.
David is the son of Laura, a teacher and elementary school principal, and Brian Eby, a personal injury lawyer. He is married to nurse, and later doctor, Cailey Lynch, with whom he has three children.
David’s patrilineal line can be traced to Theodorus Eby, who was born, c. 1663, in Emmental, Berne, Switzerland, the son of Andreas Abi and Elsbeth Blatti.
David’s paternal grandfather was Robert Vernon Eby (the son of Vernon Brubacher Eby and Iva Lorena Kramp). Robert was born in Kitchener, Waterloo, Ontario, and had a Mennonite background. David’s great-grandfather Vernon was born in Waterloo, the son of Peter M. Eby and Susannah Brubacher, who both had grandparents from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, U.S., and were of Pennsylvania Dutch [German and Swiss German] ancestry. David’s great-grandmother Iva was born in Waterloo, the daughter of Ludwig/Louis R. Kramp, whose father was born in Hütschenhausen, Kaiserslautern, Bavaria, Germany, and whose mother had roots in Lancaster County; and of Susannah/Susanna Schiedel, who had a paternal grandfather from Botenheim, Wurttemberg, as well as Pennsylvania Dutch roots.
David’s paternal grandmother was Patricia Ann McGarry (the daughter of Patrick Joseph McGarry and Henrietta/Henriette Agnes Phillips). Patricia was born in Dauphin, Manitoba. Patrick was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, the son of Irish parents, James McGarry/McGeary, from Ballygawley, Tyrone, and Annie/Ann Jane Hurson. Henrietta was born in St. Catharines, the daughter of Patrick Joseph Phillips and Hannah/Hanna/Henrietta Williams.
David’s maternal grandfather was Clarence Henry Keates (the son of Frank George Keates and Mildred Celia “Millie”/Millicent Cave). Clarence was born in Toronto, Ontario, to English parents. Frank was born in Frome, Somerset, the son of Job Keates and Caroline Mary French. Mildred was born in Berkshire, the daughter of Edwin William Cave, who was born in Ireland, to English parents; and of Alma Ann Cheeseman.
David’s maternal grandmother was the daughter of George Edward Gilson and Ellen Rose Anna Kerrison. George was the son of Charles Edward Gilson, who had roots in Norfolk, England; and of Isabella Innes, who was from Fordyce, Banffshire, Scotland. David’s great-grandmother Ellen was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, the daughter of James Albert Kerrison, who was born on the island Saint Helena; and of Ellen Knight, who was English.
