David Lynch was an American director, artist, musician, actor, and writer. He directed the films Eraserhead , The Elephant Man , Dune (1984), Blue Velvet , Wild at Heart , Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me , Lost Highway , The Straight Story , Mulholland Drive , and Inland Empire . He also wrote his first, third, fourth, fifth, ninth, and tenth films, and co-wrote the others. He co-created the shows Twin Peaks , On the Air , and Hotel Room , all of which he directed episodes for; and wrote for the first two. He appeared in the film The Fabelmans .
David was the son of Alma Edwina, an English-language tutor, and Donald Walton Lynch, a research scientist working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). His father was born in Fort Benton, Chouteau, Montana. His mother was born in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. He was partly raised in Sandpoint, Idaho; Spokane, Washington; Durham, North Carolina; Boise, Idaho; and Alexandria, Virginia, for his father’s job.
David was married to actress Emily Stofle, until his death. He had four children, including a daughter, director and screenwriter Jennifer Lynch, with his former wife, painter Peggy Reavey; a son with his former wife Mary Fisk; a son with his former wife, editor Mary Sweeney; and a daughter with Emily.
David’s paternal grandfather was Austin Eugene Lynch (the son of Alexander H. Lynch and Mary/Molly Ann Stewart). Austin was born in Colfax, Whitman, Washington. Alexander was born in Quincy, Adams, Illinois, the son of Patrick Lynch, who was Irish, from County Cavan, and of Margaret Harris. Mary Ann was born in Strawberry Point, Clayton, Iowa, the daughter of John Stewart and Jane Bradford.
David’s paternal grandmother was Maude Mable Sullivan (the daughter of Samuel Parker Sullivan and Eliza Ann Walton). Maude was born in Juliaetta, Latah, Idaho. Samuel was born in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Aaron Sullivan and Jane Lippincott. Eliza was born in Pocahonta County, Iowa, the daughter of Pearson Rathbone Walton, who was from Rutland County, Vermont, and of Prudence M. Hodge.
David’s maternal grandfather was Arthur Edward Sundholm (the son of Victor John/Johan Sundholm and Susanna/Susan Henricsdotter Konsteri). Arthur was born in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, to Finnish parents. Victor was born in Säkylä, Säkylä Municipality, Satakunta, the son of Stephen Sundholm and Mary/Maria Adriana Ahren/Örn. Susanna was born in Laihia Municipality, Ostrobothnia, the daughter of Henrik Konsteri and Anna Lisa Mänty.
David’s maternal grandmother was Lillian Jacoby (the daughter of John Conrad Jacoby and Hermine Henrietta Still). Lillian was born in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, to German parents. John was the son of Conrad Jacoby.
