Denis Potvin is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. A defenceman, he played for, and was team captain of, the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL); he also played for the Canada national team. He was the first overall pick in the 1973 NHL Entry Draft, where he was selected by the Islanders.

Denis is the son of Regina and Louis Philippe Potvin. His brother, Jean Potvin, was also an NHL defenseman, and his cousin, Marc Potvin, also played for the NHL.

Denis’ paternal grandparents were named Louis Potvin and Marie Parent.

Denis’ maternal grandfather was Nazaire Boucher (the son of Louis Boucher and Marie Mailloux). Nazaire was born in St-Paul-du-Nord. Louis was the son of Benoit-Mathias Boucher and Marie-Louise Desbiens. Marie was the daughter of Bonaventure Mailloux and Hortense Tremblay.

Denis’ maternal grandmother was Elvira LePage (the daughter of Alphonse LePage and Marie-Peggy Poitras). Alphonse was the son of Francois-Xavier LePage and Olympe Sirois. Marie-Peggy was the daughter of Jean Poitras and Adelaide Duchesne.
