A defensive midfielder, he played for Nantes, Marseille, which he also captained; Bordeaux, Juventus, Chelsea, and Valencia, and the France national team. He manages the France national team. He previously managed Monaco, Juventus, and Marseille. He captained France to victories in the 1998 World Cup and the Euro 2000.
His first cousin is professional tennis player Nathalie Tauziat. He is married to Claude Antoinette, with whom he has a son.
