Diego Forlán is a Uruguayan footballer and football manager. A striker, he played for Independiente, Manchester United, Villarreal, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan, Internacional, Cerezo Osaka, Peñarol, Mumbai City, and Kitchee, and the Uruguay national team. He managed Peñarol and Atenas. He is regarded as one of the greatest Uruguayan players of all time.

Diego is the son of Pilar Corazo and Pablo Forlán (Pablo Justo Forlán Lamarque), who is also a professional footballer. Both his parents’ surnames are Italian. His surname literally means “from Friuli,” a region in North-East of Italy, and is usually spelled Furlan. Diego has also stated that one of his grandmothers was Basque. He is sometimes said to have Irish ancestry. It is not clear if this is accurate.

Diego is married to Paz Cardoso, with whom he has four children.

Diego’s paternal grandfather was named Pablo Abel Forlán.

Diego’s paternal grandmohter was named María Mercedes Lamarque. María likely was of French-Basque descent.

Diego’s maternal grandfather was named Juan Carlos Corazzo. Juan Carlos was a professional footballer, and coach of the Uruguay national team.
