He is the son of Ellen Benard and Simon Douwe Posthuma, a painter. He has three children.
Douwe’s paternal grandfather was Douwe Posthuma (the son of Symon Posthuma and Wypkje Kramer). Douwe was born in Makkum, Súdwest-Fryslân, Friesland, Netherlands. Symon was the son of Siete Posthuma and Teetske Westerbaan.
Douwe’s paternal grandmother was surnamed de Witte.
