Earl Sweatshirt is an American rapper, singer, poet, songwriter, and record producer. He was a member of alternative hip-hop music collective Odd Future. Lionel Boyce , Tyler, the Creator , and Frank Ocean were also members of Odd Future. He has also been known as Sly Tendencies and randomblackdude. He has appeared on the shows Loiter Squad and Traveling the Stars: Action Bronson and Friends Watch Ancient Aliens .
He is the son of Cheryl Harris, a legal scholar, theorist, and professor of civil rights and civil liberties; and Keorapetse Kgositsile (Keorapetse William Kgositsile), a South African poet, political activist, and journalist. His father was born in Johannesburg, and was Tswana. He was an important anti-Apartheid activist, and member of the African National Congress (ANC). His mother is African-American. She wrote the paper “Whiteness as Property” in 1993. His father was previously married to South African politician Baleka Mbete, who was Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa, from 12 July, 2004 to 25 September, 2008, and again, from 21 May, 2014 to 21 May, 2019; and Deputy President of South Africa, from 25 September, 2008 to 9 May, 2009.
Earl is a Nichiren Buddhist. He is married to writer, stand-up comedian, and actress Aida Osman . He has two children, including a daughter with Aida.
