Hujjat al-Islam Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi (ابراهیم رئیسی) was an Iranian politician, cleric, and Muslim jurist. He was President of Iran , from 3 August, 2021 to 19 May, 2024, his death. He was also Chairman of General Inspection Office, from 22 August, 1994 to 9 August, 2004, First Deputy Chief Justice of Iran, from 27 July, 2004 to 23 August, 2014, Member of the Assembly of Experts, from 20 February, 2007 to 21 May, 2016, and again, from 24 May, 2016 to 19 May, 2024; Prosecutor-General of Iran, from 23 August, 2014 to 1 April, 2016; Member of Expediency Discernment Council, from 14 August, 2017 to 7 March, 2019; and Chief Justice of Iran, from 7 March, 2019 to 1 July, 2021; as well as custodian and chairman of bonyad/charity Astan Quds Razavi. He was a member of what has been termed the “1988 Iran death commission,” earning him the nickname “Butcher of Tehran” for executions that have been described as crimes against humanity. He was considered a hardliner, with Iran under his leadership having joined SCO and BRICS, supported Russia’s military invasions, continued uranium enrichment, and proceeded in arming Hezbollah and the Houthis. He was a member of the Principlist group on Iran’s political divide.

Ebrahim was born to a clerical family. His father, Seyed Haji, died when he was five. Ebrahim was married to writer and scholar Jamileh Alamolhoda, until his death, with whom he had two children. Jamileh is the daughter of Shia Islamic cleric, Sayyid Ahmad Alamolhoda, the Grand Imam of Imam Reza shrine.
