Ed Sullivan was an American television host, impresario, sports and entertainment reporter, and columnist. He was the host of The Toast of the Town , later The Ed Sullivan Show , from 1948 to 1971; he also created the show. Then the longest-running variety television program, it launched the U.S. careers of many famous entertainers and musicians, including Elvis Presley and The Beatles. He wrote a syndicated column for the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate.

Ed was the son of Elizabeth Frances and Peter Arthur Sullivan, a customs house employee. His father was born in Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County, New York. His mother was born in Osceola, Lewis County, New York. Ed was married to Sylvia Weinstein Sullivan, until his death, with whom he had a daughter. Sylvia was of Russian Jewish parentage.

Ed’s paternal grandfather was named Florence O. Sullivan. Florence was Irish.
