Elis Regina was a Brazilian singer. Known for bossa nova, MPB, and jazz music, she is considered one of the greatest Brazilian artists of all time. She was nicknamed “Pimentinha” and “Furacão.”
She was born in Porto Alegre, the daughter of Ercy Carvalho and Romeu de Oliveira Costa. Her father had Portuguese and Indigenous ancestry. Her mother was the daughter of Portuguese immigrants. Elis Regina had three children, music producer João Marcello Bôscoli, with her first husband, composer, songwriter, record producer, and journalist Ronaldo Bôscoli; and singers Pedro Mariano and Maria Rita, with her second husband, pianist, arranger, composer, and music producer César Camargo Mariano (born Antônio César Camargo Mariano).
Elis Regina’s paternal grandfather was Francisco Dias da Costa (the son of Bernardo Dias da Costa and Anna Candida Da Silva). Francisco was born in Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Elis Regina’s maternal grandfather was Gregório Carvalho Frade/Grade (the son of Joaquim Carvalho Grade and Augusta dos Santos). Gregório was born in Arrifana, Vila Nova de Poiares, Coimbra, Portugal, to parents who were born in Ribas, Coimbra. Joaquim was the son of João de Carvalho Grade and Maria Carvalha Faneca nova. Augusta was the daughter of José de Almeida and Thereza dos Santos.
Elis Regina’s maternal grandmother was Ana/Anna de Paiva Antunes (the daughter of Francisco Antunes Morreco and Maria Paiva). Anna was born in Portugal.
