She was born in Asmara, Eritrea. Her father was American, and was white; he was in the U.S. Air Force at the time of her birth. Her mother was Eritrean. She was raised in Kindsbach, Germany and the U.S. Ella is married to Ryan Krause, with whom she has one child. She is active with the Eritrean Youth Community. She can also speak Tigrinya, French, and German.
